Thank you very much. We are all here in solidarity with Ukraine and the defense of your sovereignty and of your territorial integrity within your internationally recognized borders. In addition, I think we also have serious concerns about the consequences and the evolution of the situation in the peninsula, as a result of the measures that have been imposed by Russia and that you have very well described.
You also described the ecological deterioration which is certainly a very serious problem. I also want to flag another concern for us which is the deterioration of the situation of human rights in Crimea. We know that there is a widespread repression of dissenting views and we know that men and women of the Tatar community pay a particular heavy price in this regard.
Last March, there was a new wave of crackdown on the Tatar community, and reports show that the Tatar community represents a greater proportion of political prisoners in Russia.

My wife was born in Sevastopol and left 20 years ago to marry me in the US. She is now a naturalized American citizen with a US passport. She wants to go back next summer but has heard horror stories and is terrified. Possible detention or worse because of the political situation. Any suggestions? If you go to Sevastopol, you should go through Russia territory flight through Moscow , because Ukraine does not let to Crimea at the moment.
However, since both of you are American citizens, this may cause questions with Russian authorities, and therefore it is not recommended to travel to Crimea at the moment. As americans, they will have issues with Russian authorities anyway, especially visiting Crimea.
Annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine expresses its resolute protest over yet another conscription to military service by the Russian Federation in the temporarily occupied part of the sovereign territory of Ukraine – in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol. Most cynically, majority of them are expected to serve beyond the Crimean Peninsula, in particular in the Southern Military District, whose military units and command are directly involved in carrying out armed aggression against Ukraine in Donbas.
Such actions by the Russian Federation constitute a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law, which prohibits Russia, as an Occupying Power, from forcing protected persons to serve in its armed or auxiliary forces. It is also forbidden to pressure and propagate in favour of voluntary military recruitment, as well as to move persons under protection outside of the occupied territory.
Moscow continues to ignore calls from the international community to stop the violations of international law by pursuing conscriptions in the temporarily occupied Crimea. The report also records numerous criminal prosecutions by the Russian occupying authorities of Crimea residents for their unwillingness to serve in the Russian army.
